John Culley

John Culley
Concordia, Kansas

John was born and raised in Concordia, Kansas. After graduating from college with a teaching degree and a major in Social Studies, John started his teaching career. John has been retired for the past 5 years, after teaching in Kansas at the secondary level for 32 years. During those years, most of his spare time was spent in his first love, woodworking. He started with his first business, Cloud County Country Clock Company. building clocks and traveling to several shows around Kansas. The enterprise expanded into other carpentry pieces and from county fairs to specialty shops.
A few years ago, after a large hail storm, he ran across a large piece of copper, salvaged from Senator Carlson's house in Concordia. That large piece of copper started him in a new direction. Copper can be a very rewarding medium but it also can be very unforgiving. He uses copper as the main subject matter and also in mixed media pieces. John's latest endeavor is working with cold wax and adding mixed media to his projects.
John loves the process of creativity. He loves the process as much or sometimes even more than the result. John says that, "The result, first of all must please you, then the greater reward is if it is pleasing and special to others."
