Designing Dragonflies

Katherine Stein
Raleigh, North Carolina

I am a natural “Fiber Loving Chick” and I dye silk scarves for resale.

I learned Shibori techniques from a friend and primarily was dying with PFD Cotton fabric. I bought a few white silk scarves from a batik class instructor and after using Shibori techniques on them I discovered a true match in heaven. The scarves come in a variety of sizes and shapes and they work wonderful with any technique I choose to use (Shibori, Batik, Brush on, and Ice).  I like to imitate what I see in nature. For example, sunrises and sunsets are great color scheme inspirations. I also enjoy the striking color contrasts you can find on insects and butterflies. Sometimes I dye with ice which creates an “out of this world” color effect and gives my work a watercolor appearance.

Currently I am using Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes which allow me to replicate some of these inspirations and create a wonderful kaleidoscope of colors and textures.
