Final Friday - Mug Show - Melanie Harvey - Trombone Sloth
Melanie Harvey lives in Lawrence, KS, and is a full-time chemistry professor at Johnson County Community College. While in her last year of graduate school she discovered clay in a non-credit community ceramics class. She eventually built a studio in her home and started selling her work in 2015. This functional pottery is wheel-thrown and made of speckled mid-fire stoneware. It is decorated with a combination of glazes and underglazes along with a standard image transfer process used to add images to each piece. They are fired an additional time in the kiln to leave a permanent, food-safe image.
From the artist: “The images in my designs are inspired by places, pets, or people in my life. We always name our hens after musicians, so I drew them as a band. My son plays trombone. The sloth is for all the bone players. They are some of the most amazing people I know.”
