May Final Friday

May 30th - June 23rd

Kick off summer with the Phoenix Gallery this Final Friday!

In the Phoenix Underground Gallery, we have a collaborative show titled “Creative Journey: Moving into Possibility”, from local artists Dorrie Sullivan and Janet Lynn Zuk. Combining pottery, painting, and storytelling, this show is a delight with a touch of whimsy that you surely won’t want to miss!

In the Upper West Gallery, we will have another Lawrence-based artist, Lauren Bass. Lauren depicts thought provoking artwork centering on the collaboration between nature and humanity in her show, “Adjacent Environments”. Abundant, lush greenery is a focal point within her pieces. Be sure to stop by and enjoy Lauren’s nature-focused body of work.

You can meet the artists and gain insight into their exhibition on opening night, May 30th from 6pm to 9 pm.

Opening night music will be provided by beloved local musicians Jeanie and Tal.

Dorrie Sullivan

Lawrence, Kansas

Dorrie Sullivan began her exploration in clay over thirty years ago as a creative outlet. Early on she focused her attention on hand-built ceramics that were organic in design, and today that translates into her cats, dogs, squirrels, foxes and other creatures. She typically works with porcelain because of its willingness to be transformed, both in form and then used as a canvas. She joins storytelling, poetry and drawing all into one, often with a storybook flair. Her pieces warm hearts, bring smiles and engage the user in play. Her anthropomorphized animals are humorous, silly, sweet and relatable. To achieve the full effect, you have to turn her work around to find new surprises. This show was an opportunity to collaborate with a painter and to go back to some of her early hand-building techniques.

Janet Lynn Zuk

Lawrence, Kansas

Janet Lynn Zuk knew she wanted to be an artist from her earliest memories. Her work is characterized by bright colors, a strong linear quality, high contrast, and a layering technique of light washes to create dimension. Her art reflects her love for the Flint Hills, sunsets, and nature. She creates both landscape and figurative pieces, aiming to evoke joy, beauty, and a sense of belonging. Her ongoing series include themes of reading, vices, and ballerinas. Janet Lynn is captivated by Kansas landscapes and the myriad shades of blue in the sky, which seem as limitless as the horizon during a beautiful sunset.

You can find Dorrie and Janet’s exhibit in the Phoenix Underground Gallery.
